William Roote was born in Horseheath on 4th June (Newmarket Q2-1879 3B:5566) baptised in Horseheath on 23rd November 1879, son of Edward and Sarah
ROOTE (née HAMMOND).
1881 census... Aged 2, he was in Horseheath with his father Edward ROOT [48] a carter, born Shudy Camps; his mother Sarah [41] born Horseheath; sisters Alice [15], Isabella [10], Susan [6] and Elizabeth [6 months], and brothers Alfred [12] and Edward [8]. All the children were born in Horseheath. 1891 census...Aged 12 he was at Woodland Paddocks, Exning with his widowed mother, sister Susan and Elizabeth and brother Alfred (a groom) 1901 census...Aged 21, he was single, a stable keeper at Pitts Head Mews, St George Hanover Square, London. On 26th December 1901 at Wicken Parish Church, he married Alice Kate DAY [6-2-1879]. His mother seems to have died in 1909 but was not found in the 1901 census. 1911 census...Aged 31, he was a domestic coachman, living in Snailwell with his wife Kate [32] born Wicken, and daughters Ctherine Mabel [8 bn 9/10/02] born Newmarket and Edith Mildred [2 bn 5/6/08] born Snailwell,and son William Edward [6 bn 2/7/04] born in Newmarket. Another son, Arthur Reginald, was born on 18th June 1914. His widow's address was 7 London Road, Stechworth. |

Living in Stetchworth, he enlisted in Newmarket . Attested on 12th December 1915 . Giving his age as 38 yrs 5 month, occupation motor driver, living at 7 London Road, Stetchworth (now considered to be Newmarket). He was 5' 6.5" (168.9 cm) tall chest 37"-40.5" (94 to 102.9 cm). He was placed on the Reserve and mobilised on 1st February 1917. On mobilisation he was entered as 38 years 7 months old, was now 5'7" (170.2 cm) tall, weighed 136 lbs (61.7 kg) , chest 38"-41" (96.5 to 104.1cm). Posted as Private to the Army Service Corps at Grove Park on 2nd February 1917. On 13 March he embarked at Devonport, disembarking at Margil on 22nd May and was taken on strength at Makina Admitted to hospital on 13th July, on the morning of 16th July 1917 he had a high fever with delirium, was seen by a medical officer and removed to hospital No.3 General Hospital, Basra, but was dead on arrival, the cause being given as heatstroke. |
